Why I Teach Evolution
Rana Dajani approaches teaching evolution by emphasizing dialogue, critical thinking, and respect for students’ cultural and religious backgrounds. In my teaching, I present evolution as a scientific framework grounded in evidence, while also creating space for students to explore how this knowledge can coexist with their personal beliefs. I use a compatibility approach, showing that science and faith—particularly within Islam—do not have to be in conflict, but can instead address different types of questions: science explains the “how” of natural processes, while religion often explores the “why” and moral meaning. By encouraging open discussion and curiosity rather than confrontation, I aim to reduce resistance and help students engage with evolutionary theory in a thoughtful and informed way, fostering both scientific literacy and a deeper sense of intellectual confidence.
